From the opening track this instantly feels like something slightly different, maybe its the razor sharp and bloodied, jagged and worrying guitar scrapes, or maybe its the slightly unnerving vocals that seem to be on the verge of ripping out their own voice box and quite simply biting off some random OAP's head. It's immense stuff this alright and over the 11 tracks here things keep on pushing and dropping away like there is no tomorrow.
It's certainly easy to name drop a list of impressivly cultish bands that could make up partss of this young group, Shellac and in some cases Slint or even Tortoise to some degree are the obvious ones, but Nitkowski are certainly not these bands nor should they ever turn into any of them. Gukurahundi pretty much proves this. The urgent mathy complex mess that makes up these four minutes is like dropping out of a plane in a bad mood and realising that it reallyREALLY doesnt matter, you can still be angry whilst falling at an unhealthy speed to your pretty much certain and messy death. Yeah, it's like that this one. Very much so and certainly a good thing too.
The melodies and intricacys that make up the bulk of these short lived wonders are mesmerising, everything seems to flow from awkward pickings to full out overdriven workouts like there is no tomorrow and that it really doesnt matter. Guitar cranks bouncing off all speakers whilst the percussion and bass flatten down more walls with their mangled off kilter yet perfectly knotted together rythems.
Tracks like Mutha Terracist and Rev Kid Perv Rap bring out the more experimental nature ofthe band, more concrete based and ambient, yet still retaining that darkness and anger. Painful stuff indeed and very very good too, another one to watch then? Oh yes...
